studioMilou with MonoLab

Established in 2021 by Wesley Liew and Jessica Baczkowski, MonoLab Studio emerges from a shared philosophy: that architecture should not dominate a place, but instead uncover its emotional resonance and sensory depth. With origins in Singapore and France, the practice bridges cultural narratives with an acute sensitivity to context, weaving together history, material memory, and the quiet poetry of crafted detail.

MonoLab Studio approaches architecture as an immersive, lived experience — a discipline where space is designed to be felt as much as it is seen. Their portfolio, spanning residential, commercial, retail, and industrial typologies, reflects a commitment to spatial storytelling. Light, texture, and geometry converge to shape atmospheres that invite reflection, movement, stillness and connection.

From concept to construction, every project is an exercise in restraint and refinement — a meditation on timeless materials, artisanal precision, and the interplay between stillness and motion. At the heart of the studio’s ethos is a guiding principle they call Designing Permanence: a belief in architecture that matures with time, that deepens in meaning and emotional resonance as it is inhabited and lived in.

What begins as minimal form gradually reveals itself through a quiet choreography of curated elements — each one distilled to its essence, crafted to awaken the senses and invite curiosity. This is architecture that whispers.. drawing the body to move, to pause, to linger.

Jessica Baczkowski

Jessica Baczkowski is a registered architect and co-founder of MonoLab Studio, with over a decade of international experience across France, China, and Singapore. She holds a Master’s degree in Architecture from l'École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Marseille (France), which included an academic year at Lund University (Sweden), and subsequently obtained her HMONP Certificate (Habilitation à la Maîtrise d'Oeuvre en Nom Propre) from the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Grenoble (France), qualifying her as a licensed architect in France.

Jessica began her professional journey in France, where she spent two years honing her skills in a local architectural practice, contributing to a range of residential, hospitality and landmark projects, including work on Rolland-Garros. She then relocated to Shanghai, China, where she joined SCDA Architects, an award-winning multidisciplinary design practice known for its refined design language. Over the course of eight years, three in SCDA Shanghai and five in SCDA Singapore, Jessica specialized in high-end residential and hospitality design, collaborating with prestigious international hotel brands including JW Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, and Four Seasons. Her role encompassed concept development, design leadership, and project management across multiple regions in Asia.

In 2021, Jessica co-founded MonoLab Studio with Wesley Liew, establishing a design-focused architecture practice rooted in innovation, narrative, and contextual sensitivity, followed by the opening of MonoLab Studio France. Their first project, The Reserve, transformed a disused electronics warehouse into a state-of-the-art secure vault for precious commodities, a striking example of adaptive reuse and architectural transformation. The Reserve received widespread international acclaim and established MonoLab Studio as a rising name in contemporary architecture. The project earned numerous prestigious International Awards.

Jessica continues to lead MonoLab Studio with a commitment to design excellence, sustainability, and creating architecture that resonate with meaning and elegance.

Wesley Liew

Wesley Liew is an architect and co-founder of MonoLab Studio, with over two decades of experience in Singapore’s architectural landscape, specialising in high-rise, residential, and landmark developments. He holds a Master’s degree in Architecture from the National University of Singapore (NUS), where he was nominated for the RIBA President’s Medals – Silver Medal, following the completion of his Bachelor of Architecture with Honours, also at NUS.

Wesley began his architectural career at SCDA Architects in Singapore, a globally recognised practice celebrated for its modernist sensibility and holistic approach to design. Over a decade with the firm, he played an integral role in the design and execution of several notable projects, gaining deep expertise in super high-rise living, complex urban developments, as well as restoration and conservation works. His contributions include landmark projects such as SCCCI (Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry), Echelon, and 19 Nassim — each shaping Singapore’s evolving urban landscape. His experience also extends internationally, with involvement in high-end hospitality, mixed-use, and residential developments such as 512 Highline in New York City, Park Central in Makati, the Ritz-Carlton in Taichung, and various projects across China. Throughout his tenure, Wesley was actively engaged across all stages of project delivery, with particular emphasis on design development, technical detailing, and interdisciplinary coordination.

In 2021, Wesley co-founded MonoLab Studio alongside Jessica Baczkowski, establishing a design-driven architectural practice anchored in innovation, contextual relevance, and spatial clarity. Their inaugural project, The Reserve, exemplifies the studio’s ethos — a bold adaptive reuse initiative that transformed a former electronics warehouse into a state-of-the-art secure facility for precious commodities. This project not only demonstrated the studio’s design sensibility and technical acumen but also garnered widespread international recognition.

The Reserve was shortlisted as a finalist for the World Architecture Festival 2024 and received multiple accolades, including the Architizer A+ Awards, Singapore Good Design (SG Mark), and Iconic Design Award, positioning MonoLab Studio as an emerging force in contemporary architectural discourse.

Wesley continues to lead MonoLab Studio with a focus on delivering innovative, thoughtful architecture that balances form, function, and environmental responsiveness.
