A 135 meter long nuclear submarine
Discretely inserted in the skyline
Of Cherbourg harbour

In 1971, the général de Gaulle launched the first French nuclear powered submarine “le Redoutable”.

In 1997 , studioMilou was commissioned to propose the way to incorporate the “Refourable” in a museum at the center of Cherbourg harbour on the site of the transatlantic maritime railway station.

studioMilou proposed to create a dry dock in the existing pier, to bring the submarine at the annual highest tide in the dry dock and to design the museum experience around the submarine.

In 2002, the mass of this gigantic submarine was docked 10 meter below sea level and almost disappeared in the previous skyline of Cherbourg Harbour.
