A few weeks ago, a very complete and sensitive report was published in Vietnam by an independent photographer, Trieu Chien. We give in this news some selected photographs of the article, and the translation in English of the Vietnamese text.
“The Da Nang Museum was renovated from a building that once housed the People’s Committee and People’s Council of Da Nang City; the City Hall (1954-1975), and the Governor’s Office (1900-1954), located in Hai Chau District. This was the first public administrative building in Da Nang City, construction began in 1898 and it was inaugurated in 1900. It represented the city’s authority through various periods and was designed by the French architect Jean François Milou.
The project is to transform this historic building into a city museum clearly demonstrates a revolutionary concept of preservation, respecting the existing historical values to the fullest extent while expanding the architectural space towards a modern, friendly, and distinct form. The addition of a new wing, like an inner courtyard, with a light, modern design that seamlessly integrates with the existing structure, aims to create an open space, welcome natural light, and foster an open, interconnected approach to surrounding public spaces such as the pedestrian square, the Library, and the French Union.
The project contributes to enhancing the cultural space value of Da Nang’s city center, creating a distinct architectural highlight that both preserves the core heritage and meets the community’s needs for recreation, learning, and experiences. The design combines preservation, modernization, and expansion, fitting the historical urban context, connecting public spaces, and promoting diverse cultural activities in the city.”
