studioMilou winner of the competition for the Ho Chi Minh city opera house

studioMilou winner of the competition for the Ho Chi Minh city opera house.

studioMilou and our local partner, HDC along with our international engineering team from ARUP, are honored to have been awarded the Jury’s highest ranking for our design creating a spectacular home for the new Ho Chi Minh’s City’s Ballet, Symphony, Orchestra and Opera House. The Award was presented on 10 December after an international competition, and we wish to thank our talented teams in Vietnam and Singapore for their tireless commitment to achieving this primary result.

The design evolved over the course of several months of research and relentless attempts to define forms at once harmonious with the spectacular Saigon riverfront location and the dynamism of its fast-evolving context in the Thu Thiem New Urban District.

12 ministries and 1000 trees in the heart of Hanoi

12 ministries and 1000 trees in the heart of Hanoi

studioMilou is proud to have received second place out of 12 short-listed entries for its design for the international Ministries of Hanoi competition, a 500,000m2 project, to house 12 buildings and 11 ministries in the capital’s centre. Our approach created a linear east- west pedestrian landscape composed of many gardens, around which an elegant series of ministry buildings creates an architectural ensemble unified with undulating veils of metal, glass and perforated GRC panels. Designed to protect pedestrian and offices from the elements and soften the light, this signature element also references the colours and moods of traditional Vietnamese weaving. By night, depending on the lighting scheme chosen, transparency between the veil, offices and the gardens creates a lantern like effect. Interiors, like the exterior, create harmonious environments, including working, common and exhibition spaces, among others.

Today, our close friend, exceptional artist and photographer for studioMilou for over twenty years, Fernando Javier Urquijo, sent us one of his works. This beautiful, poignant image of a shepherd resonates with the underlying messages of Easter, especially the sacrifice of human company. And so it also resonates with things too many are feeling at this time, worldwide.

'The Architect's Collection': The Bronze Cowrie

The second work from studioMilou’s ‘Architect’s Collection’ of unique sculptures has just been completed. This collection, for which handcrafted objects are designed or commissioned by Jean Francois Milou, engages skilled trades and craftspeople. Below, the work is based on a small, 18th century English engraved conch shell bought by the architect on auction in Paris over twenty years ago. Appreciated for the skill of the engraving above all, Jean Francois Milou recreated it as a gift, using the cameo technique and enlarging its 100's of times. Our sincere thanks to Singapore-based Metalworks, and their committed team of tradesmen who with us worked on this beautiful, permanent object.
